Unboxings
2020-2022
I first began experimenting with relational aesthetics via the creation of paper mache heads that I sent to people I admired. Some of them recorded unboxing videos, some of them thanked me via text or DM, and some people never replied (and I genuinely mean never spoke to me again). These heads were a bit like avatars, based on my ideas of who someone was purely based on their social media persona. It made me question how well I could know a person on platforms that champion “connectivity” but also inherently encourage performance and commodifiable indentity. It made me question who I was, or rather who I was performing.
